London’s Nepali Ladies Community Turns Teej Celebration Into Charity Event for Nepal Flood Victims: The Nepali Ladies Community Hounslow (NLCH) transformed its annual Teej celebration into a charity event this year, dedicating the programme to supporting people affected by devastating floods in Nepal.
Held at Feltham Assembly Hall in London, the event brought together members of the Nepali community to celebrate the cultural significance of Teej while expressing solidarity with families affected by natural disasters, particularly in Rasuwa and Nuwakot.
Organisers said the decision to turn the traditional celebration into a charity programme was driven by a desire to support Nepal during a difficult period. The event combined cultural celebrations with fundraising and messages of compassion for communities affected by the floods.
Tribute to flood victims
During the programme, participants expressed solidarity with families affected by the disaster and wished those injured a speedy recovery. A candle-lighting ceremony was also held in memory of people who lost their lives in the floods.
NLCH President Prabha Khapung said the organisation decided not to cancel the Teej programme but instead give it a humanitarian purpose, allowing the community to come together and contribute during the crisis.
Vice President Sunita Pradhan called on members of the Nepali community to unite in support of their homeland and contribute to relief efforts.
Founder President Devi Rani Gurung also thanked those who attended and supported the initiative. Participants emphasised the need for government agencies and relevant authorities to strengthen rescue and relief operations during natural disasters.
Fundraising through raffle draw
The programme was hosted by Vice President Susmita Kandangwa and Secretary Dhurvi Gurung, while Binita Basnet coordinated a raffle draw.
According to the organisers, proceeds from the raffle will also be directed towards supporting people affected by the floods.
The event was organised under the theme “A Celebration of Culture, Compassion & Community,” highlighting the ability of cultural events to bring communities together while responding to humanitarian needs.
Funds to support Nepal’s disaster relief
NLCH said that all funds raised through the charity programme would be contributed to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund of Nepal.
The money is intended to support relief, recovery and assistance for families and communities affected by natural disasters.
The organisation also said that standing alongside Nepal and Nepali people during times of crisis is a shared responsibility for the Nepali diaspora.
The charity Teej concluded with the message “Celebrate Teej. Give Hope. Rebuild Lives. Pray for Nepal,” reflecting the organisers’ effort to combine cultural heritage with humanitarian solidarity.
The event demonstrated how diaspora communities can use cultural celebrations not only to preserve traditions abroad but also to mobilise support for people facing hardship in their homeland.
