Southern California Celebrates Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti with Grand Cultural Showcase: A packed auditorium at Kennedy High School came alive on April 5 as hundreds from across Southern California gathered to celebrate Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti at a large-scale cultural event organized by Shivaji Maharaj America Parivar (SMAP).

The evening paid tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, one of India’s most revered historical figures, blending traditional Indian heritage with modern technology. Organizers aimed to make the celebration both spiritually enriching and educational, encouraging attendees to draw inspiration from Shivaji Maharaj’s life, leadership, and enduring legacy.

The program opened with a high-energy dhol tasha performance led by Sandeep Katre and his group, whose powerful rhythms energized the audience and set the tone for the evening. Emcee Sujatha Padmanabhan then guided the audience through the program, beginning with a ceremonial lamp lighting attended by community leaders, military personnel, and SMAP members.

The event also underscored the growing prominence of Indian American cultural celebrations in the region, with several civic leaders in attendance. Among them were Nitesh Patel, Mayor of La Palma; Vikesh Patel, La Palma City Councilmember; Zeel Ahir, Artesia City Councilmember; Shivender Singh, Yorba Linda City Councilmember; Frank Aurelio Yokoyama; and Pat Patnaik, Cerritos Parks and Recreation Commissioner. Representing India’s diplomatic presence was Kulwant Singh.

Ashok Madan, chairman of SMAP, welcomed dignitaries and guests, expressing gratitude for their continued support. Aparna Hande followed with a message emphasizing the relevance of Shivaji Maharaj’s ideals in today’s world. “We gather not just as an audience, but as a united community inspired by a timeless legacy of courage, vision, and self-respect,” she said.

Vijay Patil, founder and global president of SMAP, highlighted the organization’s mission to promote unity, leadership, and community service by drawing lessons from India’s historical icons. He also outlined future initiatives focused on youth engagement and leadership development. SMAP executives Vilas Jadhav and Ashutosh Khisti acknowledged donors and community supporters for their contributions.

A highlight of the evening was a pair of theatrical productions based on the Ramayana and the life and teachings of Krishna. These performances combined traditional storytelling with artificial intelligence-driven visual effects and elaborate stagecraft. Featuring more than 70 custom-made costumes and intricately designed jewelry crafted in India, the productions brought epic narratives to life while emphasizing values such as courage, strategy, and wisdom—qualities that influenced Shivaji Maharaj’s leadership.

The celebration also included a ceremonial palki procession and additional dhol tasha performances, adding a devotional dimension to the festivities. Community participation extended beyond the stage, with essay-writing and fort-building competitions designed to engage younger attendees and deepen their understanding of Indian history and heritage.

In a special segment, organizers also commemorated the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, honoring his pivotal role in unifying India and highlighting his legacy as a symbol of fearless leadership.

The event concluded on a note of unity and pride, reflecting the vibrancy of the Indian diaspora and its commitment to preserving and celebrating cultural heritage across generations.
