Sydney Glows Gold as Opera House Lights Up for Diwali 2025: Sydney turned gold on Monday night, October 13, as Diwali celebrations illuminated the city with joy, colour, and culture. The iconic sails of the Sydney Opera House glowed in vibrant hues, paying a luminous tribute to the Festival of Lights.

The lighting of the sails formed the highlight of the NSW Government’s annual Diwali event, first launched in 2011, held at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The evening brought together more than 200 community members, faith leaders, and dignitaries in a spectacular display of unity and cultural pride.

Throughout the night, Sydney shimmered with music, laughter, and light, creating a warm atmosphere of inclusion. Diwali, or Deepavali, celebrated by Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and some Buddhist communities, signifies the victory of light over darkness and good over evil — a message deeply relevant in today’s world.

Premier of New South Wales, Chris Minns, emphasized the festival’s deeper meaning, saying,

“The symbolism of Diwali couldn’t be more relevant in our multicultural society than right now. One of Diwali’s messages is that good triumphs over evil, to come together in joy and unity, working together to overcome darkness and division. On Monday night, we lit the sails of the Opera House in honour of Diwali and the communities that celebrate it.”

Minns added that the celebration serves as a reminder of NSW’s vibrant multicultural identity and the strength found in diversity.

Minister for Multiculturalism, Steve Kamper, echoed the sentiment, saying,

“Diwali brings light, joy, and togetherness. It’s a time to honour tradition, celebrate community, and share in the warmth of connection. New South Wales is proud to celebrate alongside our communities and sends its warm wishes to all who mark this beautiful occasion.”

Kamper encouraged residents to join Diwali events happening across the state — from Harris Park, Parramatta, and Blacktown to Queanbeyan and Newcastle — showcasing how the spirit of Diwali continues to unite people across cultures.

As Sydney’s skyline shimmered in gold, the Opera House lighting became a powerful symbol of harmony, hope, and renewal. The city once again demonstrated how multiculturalism continues to shape New South Wales — turning Diwali into a glowing celebration of unity and shared humanity.
