US to Automatically Renew Work Permits for H-1B, L-1 Visa Spouses Starting January. In a significant policy update, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced an automatic extension of work permits for spouses of H-1B and L-1 visa holders. Starting January 13, 2025, the renewal period for Employment Authorization Documents (EAD) will increase from 180 days to a maximum of 540 days. Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, highlighted the broader impact of the rule, stating, “Increasing the automatic extension period for certain employment authorization documents will help eliminate red tape that burdens employers, ensure hundreds of thousands of individuals eligible for employment can continue to contribute to our communities, and further strengthen our nation’s robust economy.”
The rule applies to EAD renewal applications that were pending or filed on or after May 4, 2022. The extension aims to address delays caused by lengthy processing times, preventing eligible applicants from experiencing disruptions in their employment authorization.
Ur M. Jaddou, Director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), emphasized the agency’s commitment to streamlining immigration processes, saying, “USCIS is committed to reducing unnecessary barriers and burdens in the immigration system to support our nation’s economy.”
