Historic Milestone for Indian Chess: Viswanathan Anand Takes Charge as FIDE Interim President: Indian chess icon Viswanathan Anand has added another historic chapter to his extraordinary legacy by taking charge as the Interim President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), becoming the first Indian to lead the global governing body of chess in an executive capacity.

The five-time World Chess Champion assumed the role after FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich voluntarily suspended his duties following his inclusion in the European Union’s sanctions list. To ensure uninterrupted governance of the sport, Anand, who has served as FIDE Deputy President since 2022, has stepped in as Interim President.

The appointment marks a landmark moment not only for Anand personally but also for Indian chess, reflecting the country’s growing influence in the international chess community. Once regarded as a nation with a single world champion, India is now home to a new generation of elite grandmasters, including reigning World Champion D. Gukesh, R. Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, and R. Vaishali, making it one of the strongest chess nations globally.

Anand’s transition from champion to administrator has been years in the making. Elected as FIDE Deputy President in 2022, he has played an active role in promoting chess development, youth participation, and the expansion of the game worldwide. His appointment as Interim President places one of the sport’s most respected figures at the helm during a crucial period for international chess governance.

The timing is particularly significant as FIDE prepares for the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where India will defend its titles with star-studded men’s and women’s teams. During Anand’s interim leadership, FIDE is also expected to oversee important decisions, including preparations for major international competitions.

Anand’s achievements on the board remain unparalleled. India’s first Grandmaster, he won five World Chess Championship titles and played a pivotal role in transforming chess from a niche sport into a mainstream discipline across the country. His success inspired an entire generation of players who are now dominating international tournaments.

His appointment is widely viewed as recognition of both his sporting achievements and his ability to provide stable, respected leadership at the highest level of global chess administration.

While Anand will serve as Interim President until Dvorkovich resumes his duties or a permanent decision is made, his elevation underscores India’s emergence as a global chess powerhouse—not only through its world-class players but also through its leadership within the sport’s highest governing body.

For Indian sports, Anand’s appointment represents more than an administrative transition. It is a symbol of the country’s growing influence in international sports governance and another proud milestone in the remarkable journey of Indian chess.
