Aaron Rai Makes History with PGA Championship Triumph, Becomes First Englishman in Over a Century to Win Title: South Asian-origin golfer Aaron Rai delivered a stunning, composed, and record-breaking final round on Sunday to capture the PGA Championship, becoming the first English-born player in more than a century to claim the prestigious title.

Rai, who once dreamed of becoming a Formula 1 driver before committing fully to golf in childhood, produced a masterclass under pressure to rise from three shots behind and dominate a world-class field.

A pivotal breakthrough came at the par-5 ninth hole, where he sank a remarkable 40-foot eagle putt. From that moment, Rai’s precision putting became unstoppable as he one-putted seven consecutive greens to seize control of the championship.

On the closing stretch, with rivals closing in, Rai delivered one of the defining shots of the tournament—a sensational 70-foot birdie putt on the 17th green that effectively sealed his victory.

He closed with a brilliant 5-under 65, finishing at 9-under 271, and winning by three strokes over 54-hole leader Alex Smalley and Jon Rahm.

To be here is outside my wildest imagination,” Rai said after lifting the Wanamaker Trophy.

A Field Full of Champions Overwhelmed

The final round featured elite names including Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Cameron Smith, and Justin Rose—all major champions—who briefly contended before crucial mistakes ended their challenge.

McIlroy, who closed with a 69, struggled on key scoring opportunities, including a bogey on the par-4 13th, while frustration showed late in his round as his hopes faded.

Justin Thomas also mounted a charge with a final-round 65, but Rai’s relentless finishing surge ensured the outcome was never truly in doubt.

Historic Achievement for South Asian Heritage Golf

Rai’s victory marks a double milestone—he becomes the first English-born winner of the PGA Championship in over 100 years and joins Vijay Singh as one of the only players of Indian heritage to win a men’s major championship.

He also becomes the first Englishman since Jim Barnes in 1919 to lift the Wanamaker Trophy, ending a century-long wait.

Rai sealed his triumph by playing the final 10 holes in six-under-par, separating himself decisively from the field.

Family Roots and Early Life

Aaron Rai was born to parents Amrik Singh and Dalvir Shukla, both of Indian descent. His father was born in England to immigrants from India, while his mother migrated from Kenya to England as a teenager. His father worked as a community worker and was also an amateur tennis player. His mother held multiple roles, including as a mental-health nurse and aerobics instructor.

Rai grew up with three older siblings—two sisters and one brother—and completed his secondary education at Wolverhampton Grammar School.

His introduction to golf came at age four after he was accidentally struck by his brother’s hockey stick, prompting his mother to buy him safe plastic golf clubs. What began as a childhood adaptation quickly became a lifelong passion.

As a child, Rai also loved Formula 1 racing and often wore Ferrari gear at junior tournaments before fully committing to golf.

He trained at the Three Hammers Golf Complex from age four and joined Patshull Park Golf Club at age five, where his early development as a golfer took shape.

He is married to Gaurika Bishnoi, a professional golfer from India.

A Champion Defined by Precision and Perseverance

Rai’s victory at Aronimink is being celebrated as one of the most composed major championship performances in recent memory. His blend of discipline, technical precision, and mental resilience not only secured a historic title but also elevated him into a new tier of global golf excellence.

With this win, Aaron Rai has not only broken records—he has redefined expectations for the next generation of golfers with South Asian heritage on the world stage.
