Kuwait Presents Highest National Award to PM Modi; Amir Says ‘You Earned It’. On Sunday, Kuwait honoured Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Order of Mubarak the Great, the country’s highest national award, in recognition of his role in strengthening relations between the two nations. The award presentation took place at Bayan Palace, with Kuwait’s Amir, HH Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, personally bestowing the honour to PM Modi. Present at the ceremony was Kuwait’s Prime Minister, HH Sheikh Ahmed Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

In his remarks, PM Modi dedicated the award to the enduring friendship between India and Kuwait, the one-million-strong Indian community residing in Kuwait, and the 1.4 billion people of India. “I am honoured to be conferred the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Order by His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah,” Modi wrote on X. “I dedicate the honour to the people of India and to the strong friendship between India and Kuwait.”

Sheikh Meshal Al-Sabah, the Amir of Kuwait, responded by saying, “This is our highest medal and you have earned it. We have maintained bonds with the Republic of India for hundreds of years.” The presentation of the award during the first visit by an Indian premier to Kuwait in 43 years “added a special meaning to the occasion,” the Ministry of External Affairs noted.

Instituted in 1974, the Order of Mubarak the Great has previously been awarded to global figures such as Queen Elizabeth II, former U.S. presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. PM Modi has now received state honours from 19 countries, including Saudi Arabia’s Order of King Abdul Aziz, Palestine’s Order of the State, the United Arab Emirates’ Order of Zayed, Fiji’s Order of Fiji, and Egypt’s Order of the Nile.

Last month, Modi was also honoured with Nigeria’s Grand Commander of the Order of Niger for his efforts in strengthening bilateral ties. Additionally, he received Dominica’s Award of Honour, acknowledging his contributions during the Covid-19 pandemic and his role in enhancing bilateral relations with Dominica.
