Yogendra Puranik, Japan’s Trailblazing Indian-Origin Leader, Honored by Japan Self-Defense Forces for Educational Contributions. Yogendra Puranik, widely known as Yogi よぎ, has added another remarkable achievement to his illustrious career. In January 2025, the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) honored him with a prestigious award for his outstanding contributions to the field of education. The grand ceremony, held in Mito, recognized Yogi’s transformative work in revolutionizing Japan’s educational landscape.

Yogi, a multifaceted personality, has worn many hats throughout his career. He is Japan’s first Asian-origin Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), the first Indian-origin civil services officer in Japan, and the first foreign-origin principal of a public school. Currently, he serves as a Gazetted Civil Services Officer in the Education Department of Ibaraki Prefecture, where he holds three pivotal roles: Head of the Education DX Committee, Principal of Ibaraki’s oldest school, and lead designer of a new co-academic curriculum.



In his role, Yogi has been instrumental in implementing innovative educational methods, globalizing teaching approaches, enhancing career guidance, and optimizing operational efficiency. His efforts have already yielded visible results, earning widespread acclaim in local media. Yogi’s work has not only transformed education in Ibaraki but has also sparked interest among politicians and bureaucrats in India, with whom he is actively sharing his expertise.
The JSDF award is particularly significant as it recognizes Yogi’s unwavering commitment to education without any application or nomination process. This honor underscores the impact of his initiatives, which align with his vision of establishing public international schools and developing an inclusive, multilingual curriculum.
