UK Emerges as Largest Importer of Pakistani Mangoes. Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce has announced that the country exported its renowned mangoes to 42 countries this year, with the United Kingdom emerging as the largest importer. Known for their sweet and succulent flavour, Pakistani mangoes have generated $46.7 million in exports, with a total export volume of 13,681 metric tonnes, as reported by Geo News.

During a National Assembly session on Friday, the Ministry confirmed that the UK imported $13.2 million worth of mangoes, placing it at the top of the list. The United Arab Emirates followed closely, with imports valued at $9.2 million. Other significant importers include Germany, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar, showcasing the global demand for Pakistan’s tropical fruit.

In Europe, Germany imported $1.9 million worth of mangoes, while Oman purchased $1.7 million. Saudi Arabia followed with $1.3 million, and Afghanistan imported mangoes worth $2.2 million.

Despite these positive numbers, the All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association (APFVEA) expressed concerns regarding the future of mango exports. Mian Waheed Ahmed, the patron-in-chief of APFVEA, highlighted that climate change has severely impacted mango production for the third consecutive year.

“The effects of climate change emerged as the biggest threat to mango production,” said Ahmed. Pakistan, which produces approximately 1.8 million metric tonnes of mangoes annually, has seen a sharp decline in output. Traditionally, 70% of the country’s mangoes come from Punjab, 29% from Sindh, and 1% from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, due to adverse weather conditions, Punjab produced only 35% of its usual output, while Sindh’s production fell to less than 20%.

Earlier, Ahmed noted that erratic weather patterns, including prolonged winters, unseasonal rain, hailstorms, and subsequent heatwaves, have drastically altered the agricultural landscape. These challenges not only pose risks to this year’s mango production but also threaten future exports.

As climate change continues to impact agriculture, Pakistan’s mango industry faces mounting pressure to adapt, ensuring that this cherished export remains a symbol of the country’s agricultural excellence.
